Location: Ruidoso, New Mexico, USA

Accommodations:  Cabin, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath (Sleeps 4)

Casa Angeles is located in the Lincoln National Forest just two miles off a main road in Ruidoso. Perched at the foot of a mountain on one and one-half acres, the quiet serenity of the surroundings make it a perfect getaway for couples or individuals looking for a spiritual retreat in nature.

The cabin has one bedroom upstairs in the loft that accesses a private deck where deer, birds and other wildlife will pass by. The second bedroom is downstairs, making privacy for two couples. The cabin has central heat, ceiling fans and wood stove. Casa Angeles was built in 2004 and is the owners' second home. They have furnished it in a way that makes you feel like it's your home too. The kitchen is fully stocked with staples and cookware making it easy to go to the store for the main items and prepare delicious meals in the comfort of your retreat. There's a washer/dryer supplied with eco-friendly products for your convenience. Lawn chairs, bird feeders, hummingbird feeders and an air mattress for star gazing from the deck are all available.

Hiking, walking and being in nature is the big attraction at Casa A. The silence of the secluded area with the sound of Cedar Creek as it falls over beautiful rocks make it a perfect place to contemplate life and journal your heart out. New Mexico enacts measures to protect their night sky, therefore, the star gazing is wonderful on clear nights. When you tire of the silence, you can watch movies or listen to music or go into town and shop, visit the museums or reserve a night at the Spencer Theatre.

Close by in Ruidoso Downs is one of the biggest purses in horse racing during the summer months and the Mescalero Apache Indians host gambling in their casinos at the Downs and at the Inn of the Mountain Gods. Delicious food is served up all over town. There's a restaurant for every kind of taste and budget. In the middle of town is a Links golf course and another 18 hole course at the Inn of the Mountain Gods. Snow skiing at Ski Apache is only minutes away with down hill and snowboarding. All the ski rentals are available in town.

    • My fiance and I arrived around 4 p.m. on Friday (July 13) and by 5 p.m. we had already spotted a dozen deer off the deck, some of them walking within 15 feet of us. They were as interested in us as we were in them. I'd never been that close to deer for that long of a period of time. It was constant for about an hour. Throughout the first several hours, it rained on and off and was quite a show. But we never left the deck, afraid we'd miss another deer. The cabin is new and beautiful and has one of the best settings on Cedar Creek Road. The deck backs right up to the mountain, which makes for great wildlife watching we found out rather quickly. The front is spacious and well off the road. The creek runs near the road, about 30 feet from the cabin, and makes quite a noise with a good flow through the rocks and under the road. It is actually loud enough to hear while all the way on the back deck. Make sure to make the effort to pump up the air mattress in the loft closet for evenings. Dusk is amazing and then the star show starts. Too many to count. Thousands. We were in awe. I'm a television reporter for ABC in El Paso and my weeks can be rather stressful with the deadlines. I found it the perfect place to unwind on a three-day weekend. If stars aren't your thing, then put the provided hummingbird feeders out during the cool afternoon (never got hotter than 75 degrees the whole time), lay down under the feeders and watch the hummingbirds swarm overhead. Pretty cool. Place is perfect for two couples with a bedroom with plenty of privacy downstairs, although the best view and the morning deer parade is best viewed from the loft bedroom off the deck. We used the downstairs bedroom as our dressing room since the bathroom is next to it downstairs and the loft can be a little cramped. Although there is no cable, there is a DVD player and some good movies and documentaries provided. There are a couple of movie rental places in town. Or you might want to bring a favorite or two for the evenings. Going out to eat? If you like Chinese food, try the Great Wall of China on Sudderth.

    • A fabulous retreat house in nature. It has most anything you need for a home away from home. It's close to the city for great food and shopping, and yet feels very private and isolated. Lots of great hiking in the forest, and the vistas are beautiful. The house itelf is very well maintained, and very comfortable with attention to detail. I had a wonderful visit there and can't wait to return. It's a little slice of paradise.

    • What a gift to be in this magical place. Sitting on the deck taking in the stunning beauty - having deer come up close enough to see details in their ears! And the sound of the creek running so gently through the grounds - the beauty of the natural world here is true medicine. And the cabin is cozy with many special touches - you can tell that the owners take great care of this special place And on a practical basis, it has everything you could possibly need. Thank you - we can't wait to come back!
